Cost-Effective Portable SVE Removes PCE for Residential Redevelopment

Portable SVE Remediates PCE in Less Than 5 Months for Residential Redevelopment in Campbell, CA

Learn how GRI’s portable SVE system removed 88 pounds of PCE in 132 days at a former automotive site in Campbell, CA, achieving up to 94% soil vapor reduction and site closure at a fraction of the cost of permanent SVE systems.

Project Overview

GRI was contracted by AEI Consultants to provide a portable soil vapor extraction (SVE) system to treat tetrachloroethene (PCE) in soil vapor at a former automotive center consisting of an auto shop, car wash, tire shop, and fueling center in Campbell, CA. A former dry cleaner at the adjacent shopping center with significant PCE contamination along the sewer line may have also contributed to the PCE in soil vapor on-site. The site was slated for residential home development.

Prior to remediation, PCE was detected at concentrations up to 32,000 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) at 5 feet below ground surface (bgs), 117,000 µg/m3 at 15 feet bgs, and 685,000 µg/m3 at 30 feet bgs.

Remediation Strategy

GRI’s portable SVE system operated from October 2015 to March 2016 for a total of 132 days of run time, during which approximately 88 pounds of PCE mass were removed. Verification sampling at 60 days after SVE showed PCE at a maximum of 1,800 µg/m3 at 5 feet (a 94% reduction), 11,000 µg/m3 at 15 feet (a 90% reduction), and 270,000 µg/m3 at 30 feet (a 60% reduction).

Since vapor intrusion mitigation systems (VIMS) were already proposed for some homes, remediation was deemed complete to the extent practicable. Case closure was granted in May 2017 with VIMS installed under 4 out of the 25 new homes constructed.

Cost Efficient Results

With less than 5 months of run time, the cost for GRI’s portable SVE system was less than a quarter of the average cost to design, permit, and install a permanent SVE system. When you factor in operating costs as well, the cost of GRI’s portable SVE system was less than one-fifth of the average cost of a permanent system.
